Impact of Diseases on Fertility: A Rising Concern in India

“In India, the impact of chronic diseases on fertility is increasingly evident, with urban centers like Surat facing notable challenges. As chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune disorders become more prevalent, their effects on reproductive health are coming into sharper focus.
Managing these conditions effectively is crucial for maintaining fertility. Diabetes, for example, can impair fertility in both men and women. Women with poorly controlled diabetes may experience irregular menstrual cycles, ovulation problems, and a heightened risk of miscarriage. Men may face reduced sperm quality and erectile dysfunction. Similarly, hypertension (high blood pressure) poses risks to reproductive health, leading to complications like preeclampsia in women and reduced sperm count in men. Autoimmune disorders, including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, can disrupt hormonal balance and affect reproductive organs, complicating fertility further.
In Surat, where healthcare resources can be unevenly distributed, the impact of untreated infections like tuberculosis and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) on fertility is also significant. “”Chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune disorders are becoming increasingly common and can severely impact fertility. Managing these conditions effectively is crucial for preserving reproductive health” Dr. Aashita Jain, IVF Specialist, Birla Fertility and IVF Surat.
Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach that integrates chronic disease management with fertility care. “Taking a comprehensive approach by addressing chronic illnesses alongside fertility treatments not only enhances health outcomes but also supports couples in achieving their family planning goals”” adds Dr. Jain.”
