It happened because of Messi’s passport. According to reports, Messi was traveling on a Spanish passport instead of an Argentinean one. His Spanish passport did not have a Chinese visa.
According to local media, Messi faced this problem upon arrival in Beijing because he used his Spanish passport instead of the Argentinean one. The airport security personnel were confused when Messi didn’t use Argentina’s passport. Messi was detained for about 30 minutes and the issue was resolved. After that, Messi was given an entry visa and then he left the airport. It should be noted that Chinese visa-free entry is not applicable to Spanish passports.
